Review: Baker Days Valentines letterbox cake

There have been more things arriving at the Fishfingers for tea abode, cake this time. Baker Days recently got in touch asking if we’d like to review one of their letterbox Valentines cakes. Baker Days specialise in cakes that fit through your letterbox, though they also have a range of cupcakes and all letterbox cakes can be increased in size. There are 400 designs to choose from, 5 cake flavour options and also the ability to personalise each cake with text or by uploading your own photo.

Baker Days valentines letterbox cake review

We were sent the double chocolate chip cake which, though I have some concerns about the claim that all cakes will stay fresh for at least 14 days from dispatch, was wonderfully moist, distinctly chocolaty and packed with chocolate chips. I was surprised as, given the size of the cake, it wouldn’t have been unusual if it was on the dry side. The letterbox cake provides 4-5 portions and is priced from £14.99 with free delivery.

The layer of icing was thin but in the right proportion to the size of the cake. The colours were more lurid than I was expecting and whilst this wasn’t a problem for us it may be something to bear in mind if you’ve opted for a delicate pastel design. Having said that, I was impressed with the number of designs that are available throughout their whole range, there seems to be something to suit nearly all tastes.

The cake arrived in a sturdy cardboard box packed tightly into a separate tin and was accompanied by a small packet of Love Hearts. It didn’t fit through our letterbox and I’m not sure if this is because ours is small or because of the draught excluder fitted on to it. I do think that the tin is a nice touch though, especially if you’re sending one to a fellow tin addict.

I love the concept of Baker Days and though I have do have some concerns, I think this is a company that will go from strength to strength. A unique, personalised and tasty cake dropping through the door of someone you love sends a clear message…I thought of you and sent you cake.

The Good:

It’s cake through your letterbox. The sheer novelty of someone receiving cake in this way will make them smile.

The range of designs is impressive and with the ability to personalise you’re going to end up with something that is unique to your recipient.

They offer a gluten and wheat free option which is pleasing to see.

The Not So Good:

If your letterbox isn’t a standard size then you may end up with a trip to the post office, not necessarily a hardship but something to keep in mind.

Disclosure: I was sent a Baker Day Valentines cake for free for review purposes. I was not required to write a positive review and all thoughts and opinion remain my own. With thanks to Baker Day for my review sample.

But doesn’t the cake smash inside the tin when it hits the floor? Other than that it sounds an interesting idea.

I can’t guarantee it as the box but wouldn’t fit through our letterbox but other people who have reviewed the cakes don’t seem to have had an issue. The cake is packed tightly in the tin and the box is sturdy enough I think. Hope that helps!
