Pinterest and chocolate bark

Pinterest is becoming something of an obsession. I go on meaning to just have a quick peek and finally look up an hour later.

It’s not that I do a lot of repinning myself but I get lost in a maze of images and links and, ultimately, blogs. I click on something that catches my attention, follow through to the blog and then end up wandering about over there for ages.

A lovely way to spend some time but I end up neglecting the Greader until it explodes. Yes, I have just hit ‘Mark all as read’. Sometimes it’s the only solution.

But!

Not only did I discover the wonderful world of chocolate cake in a mug, I found Bark.

I didn’t know that it was called Bark to be honest. And the name makes no sense to me whatsoever but when something tastes this good I’m willing to overlook a somewhat curious name (and let’s be honest, some names could put people off at first if you didn’t know what it was – Toad in the hole anyone?)

Basically bark is a sheet of chocolate topped with pretty much any combination of yumminess you can think of. You can buy very similar things in places such as Hotel Chocolat but with a price tag that may produce a little wince.

I ended up reading a few recipes and then just getting on with it. The first lot (yes, there has been more than one lot made) was topped with crushed Maltesers, the second with smarties and mini marshmallows. But let your imagination go wild. Fruit, nuts, sweeties, crushed biscuits. The options are never ending.

A good idea for home-made presents and something that the kids can get involved with. How about Christmassy version with cranberries? (Yes, I did just use the C word. And whilst I’m at it, you could also make some chocolate truffles

There is no recipe as such. Melt about 400g chocolate ( I use 300g milk and 100g dark) and pour into a shallow tin lined with greaseproof paper and then go to town with the toppings.  Leave to set (I slung mine in the fridge for a couple of hours but this seemed to be a no-no amongst the bark purists) and then chop up into pieces. Or come over all cave woman and break it up with your hands!

About Sian Reynolds

I'm Sian, mother to a three year old who thinks she’s a teenager and a husband who has issues with cows. Both have insatiable appetites and are rather fond of cake. And chocolate. And cheese. Freelance this and that, coffee drinker, food blogger. I seem to spend most of my time in the kitchen, with one eye on the laptop and the other watching the toddler run around with a colander on her head.

Are you planning on sending us a small piece?  I volunteer to be chief taster – it looks fab and so much more fun than buying a slab.

Lol, thank you! It was a lot of fun to make. I’ve put it on the list of things to do with the toddler this summer holidays!
