Who makes your birthday cake?

I have been tagged by the lovely Amy over at Cooking, Cakes and Children with the meme ‘Who makes your Birthday cake?’

Um…the short answer is no-one, Mr Supermarket baker or me.

To be honest I could only remember one birthday cake from when I was a little girl – a glorious pink affair with a picture of a My Little Pony on the top.  I asked my Mum and she said that as she is such a terrible sponge baker she always bought my birthday cakes from the supermarket and stuck candles on the top.

A few years ago a friend took to buying me one from Thorntons, which they sadly don’t seem to do any more.  It was a chocoholics dream; chocolate sponge layered with chocolate buttercream, covered with more chocolate and then decorated with chocolate shavings and truffles to pick off!

Last year Rich and I got married on my birthday so now the cake is more of an anniversary cake than birthday cake.  For our wedding a friend made our cake as our present.  It had a tier of iced fruit cake and then two tiers of individual chocolate and vanilla sponges. Thinking about it, that was the first time anyone had actually made a cake on my birthday, even if it wasn’t actually for my birthday!
